The Dalai Lama has apologized after a video showed him asking a boy to “suck my tongue.”
The incident, which sparked criticism of the Tibetan spiritual leader’s behavior, reportedly happened at the Dalai Lama’s temple in northern India in February.
“A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug,” a statement from his office on Monday, April 10, said.
His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”
The statement added that the 87-year-old Dalai Lama regretted the incident.
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras,” it said.
In 2019, the Dalai Lama also had to apologize after saying that a female successor should be “attractive.”
