‘Contra Mundum: Ang All-Star Concert ng ‘Ang Larawan’’ to stream online this Saturday

Contra Mundum: Ang All-Star Concert ng “Ang Larawan” will be shown online this weekend, making it more accessible for theater fans.

The musical concert is slated to be streamed on Facebook this Saturday, May 20, at 7 p.m., according to the Metropolitan Theater (MET).

It will be shown on the Facebook pages of MET, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), Project Saysay, Intramuros Administration (IA), and the Department of Education (DepEd). 

The concert version of Ang Larawan was first staged at the MET for free on May 6.

The show was produced by Celeste Legaspi, Girlie Rodis, and Aaron Veloso. Chris Millado, the artistic director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), directed the concert, along with the musical direction of National Artist of the Philippines for Music Ryan Cayabyab.

The concert featured a roster of theater artists, film, and television stars namely Rachel Alejandro, Hajji Alejandro, Bea Alonzo, Paulo Avelino, Kakai Bautista, Nonie Buencamino, Roeder Camañag, Ricky Davao, Dulce, Bituin Escalante, Jaime Fabregas, Nonoy Froilan, Audie Gemora, Nanette Inventor, Agot Isidro, Karylle, Celeste Legaspi, Jojit Lorenzo, Sandino Martin, Bodjie Pascua, Jericho Rosales, Aicelle Santos, Markki Stroem, Kakki Teodoro, Mitch Valdes, Nyoy Volante, Mikkie Bradshow-Volante, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, who celebrated their golden anniversary last week, and the Alice Reyes Dance Philippines were also part of the show.

Ang Larawan was based on the 1950 literary play by National Artist Nick Joaquin titled A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, which was translated in Filipino by National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio.

Set in pre-World War II, Ang Larawan centers on two unmarried daughters of a high profile painter, Candida and Paula Marasigan, who must contemplate whether or not to sell their father’s painting to solve their financial hardship.

Movie version

Aside from the musical play, Ang Larawan also had a movie adaptation of the same name which premiered at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival in October 2017. 

Two months later, it premiered in Philippine cinemas as one of the entries to the 43rd Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). 

It bagged five awards at the MMFF’s Gabi ng Parangal in the same year which consisted of Best Picture, Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award, Best Musical Score, Best Production Design, and Best Actress in Leading Role for Joanna Ampil, who gave life to Candida.
