Classes in public schools, gov’t work in NCR, Bulacan suspended on FIBA World Cup opening day

by Carl Santos

Classes in public schools and work in government offices in the National Capital Region and Bulacan on August 25, the opening day of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, have been suspended.

The suspension was directed through Memorandum Circular 27 issued by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on Tuesday, citing the government’s commitment ”towards wider involvement and participation in sports promotion and development” and to extend support to ensure the successful conduct of the opening ceremonies of the World Cup at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or performance of other functions were directed to continue with their operations.

“The suspension of work for private companies and classes in private schools is left to the discretion of their respective heads,” the memorandum stated.

Co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, which features 32 national teams, will run from August 25 to September 10.
