Check out this local brand that sells nostalgic kumot-pieces

by Joyce Remo

THE modern fashion scene has been taking people on a trip down memory lane with the resurgence of the Y2k style, which has mini-skirts, baby tees, and colorful beaded accessories emerging all over Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds.

But locally, a homegrown brand has been transporting customers back to the good old days as it has transformed the “pambansang kumot” – the striped and floral printed blankets that many people grew up sleeping with — into fun and quirky clothing pieces.

Everyday fit with Nobody Clothing

Established in 2016, Nobody Clothing started making t-shirts in its old shop in Cubao Expo in Quezon City. Though the physical store closed down last year, the brand continues to operate online through its website and social media pages.

After producing cool graphic tees, sweats, hoodies, shorts, and caps, Nobody Clothing decided to use the Filipino-favorite blankets as its material for new wardrobe designs.

These iconic blankets, which use a print borrowed from the Malaysian batik, were transformed into button-down shirts available in full-length and cropped versions.

Nobody Clothing said it crafted the designs in the hopes of helping people relive fond memories of moments spent in places where they felt safe and with people they love.

“We hope that these shirts bring back memories of more carefree times, and of all the places and people we call home,” the brand said.

The initial releases were the Milagros and Mila pieces. These are regular and cropped shirts using the typical pink floral blanket design made of Sparrow-333 blankets that originated in Malaysia.

Nobody Clothing shared that these clothes were named after a lady the team admires — one who made the members brave enough to dream.

“This one is named after a lady who is very close to hearth and home. We don’t know if she knows this but this little dream of a brand would not exist if [it] weren’t for her,” it said.

Aside from the pink ensembles, this clothing series is also available in blue, green, and orange designs that will surely remind customers of their wistful histories.

Nobody Clothing also shared that the full-length and cropped pieces of each design are cut from the same blanket in its seamstress’ table in Marikina. Hence, someone somewhere will be wearing a twin of one’s purchased clothing piece.

“Life connects us all in strange and beautiful ways,” it said.

While these polos are still out of stock as they have been selling like hotcakes after each release, Nobody Clothing said it will be restocking the designs at the end of the month.

Interested customers can pre-order through Nobody Clothing’s official website.  It opens pre-order slots for this particular product once a month, it said.
