Close to 38,000 people have been affected by Mayon Volcano’s unrest, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday.

In an update, the NDRRMC said the volcanic activity has affected 37,682 individuals, or 9,167 families, from 26 barangays in Albay province.

Of this number, 17,216 people, or 4,813 families, are staying in 25 evacuation centers, and 725 people, or 200 families, sought shelter elsewhere.

Some P37.3 million worth of assistance has been provided to the affected communities, which includes hot meals, hygiene kits, tents, and water.

Mayon, which has been under Alert Level 3 since June 8, began to spew lava on Sunday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Albay is currently under a state of calamity.
