Ariana Grande says commenting on others’ bodies is not OK

by Joyce Remo

American pop superstar Ariana Grande has addressed criticism of her body with the hope that something positive may result from being honest about her feelings.

Grande aired her sentiments in a TikTok video.

“I just wanted to address your concerns about my body and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to,” she said.

“I know I shouldn’t have to explain that, but I do feel like maybe having an openness and some sort of vulnerability here …something good might come [out] of it,” she added.

Grande has received numerous body-shaming remarks following her recent photo on Instagram.

Some netizens pointed out how “thinner” Grande has become and that she should “eat more” because she “doesn’t look healthy.”

The Thank U, Next songstress underscored that despite the good intentions, commenting on someone’s body is not okay, and people should feel apprehensive about making unsolicited remarks regarding others’ appearance.

“I think we could be, I think we should be, gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what,” said Grande.

“If you think you’re saying something good or well-intentioned, whatever it is, healthy, unhealthy, big, small, this, that, sexy, nonsense — we just should really work towards not doing that as much,” she added.

The Nickelodeon alum, who is currently in production for the film Wicked, said that “there are many different kinds of beautiful, and there are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful.”

Grande, 29, shared that the body that people have been comparing her current body to was the unhealthiest version of herself. She also admitted to having been taking “a lot” of antidepressants and “eating poorly” in the past.

“I know personally, for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body,” Grande continued. “I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them, and eating poorly, and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy but that, in fact, wasn’t my healthy.”

Aside from addressing the inquiries on her health, the positions hitmaker also reminded fans to refrain from making any comments, even those that have positive intent. Grande also urged fans to be more gentle and to be each other’s safe spaces.

“You never know what someone is going through, so even if you are coming from a loving place and a caring place, that person probably is working on it or has a support system that they are working on it with,” said Grande.

“You never know, so be gentle with each other and with yourselves.”
