5.2 magnitude earthquake jolts Luzon

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Looc, Occidental Mindoro early Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). 

The tremor, which was recorded at 12 a.m., was felt in Metro Manila and several other Luzon provinces. 

No damage was reported from the incident, but the public could expect aftershocks, said Phivolcs.  

The earthquake was of tectonic origin, which means the movement was influenced by an active fault near the area. 

Phivolcs said it had a depth of 74 kilometers and its epicenter was in Looc, Occidental Mindoro. 

It was also felt at various reported intensities in different areas.  

Intensity V was reported in Sablayan and Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, and Intensity IV in San Jose and Paluan, Occidental Mindoro; and Puerto Galera, City of Calapan, and San Teodoro in Oriental Mindoro. 

It was at Intensity III in Manila and Las Pinas in Metro Manila; City of Lipa and Batangas City, in Batangas province; Abra de Ilog and Lubang in Occidental Mindoro; and Alfonso Cavite. 

Intensity II was reported in Quezon City, Pasig, Marikina, Makati, Valenzuela, Bacoor City, and Looc, Occidental Mindoro. 

Meanwhile, instrumental intensities were also recorded in various areas.

These are different from reported intensities, which are earthquake information based on reports or assessments sourced from seismic stations or those from disaster risk reduction management offices.

Instrumental intensities are records from intensity meters installed in identified areas connected to  Phivolcs  office via internet, according to Phivolcs.

Instrumental Intensity IV was recorded in Puerto Galera and Calapan City, and Intensity III in Lemery and Calatagan, Batangas; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Magallanes and Tagaytay City in Cavite; and Las Pinas City. 

Intensity II was recorded in Abucay, Bataan; Cuenca, San Luis, Bauan, Laurel, Batangas City, and Sta. Teresita in Batangas province; Marilao, Malolos City, Guiguinto, Calumpit, and Pulilan in Bulacan; Tagaytay City and Ternate in Cavite; Muntinlupa City; Abra De Ilog in Occidental Mindoro; and Victoria in Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity I was recorded in Dinalupihan, Bataan; Talisay and Lipa in Batangas; Norzagaray and Obando in Bulacan; San Juan, Pasay, Malabon, Pateros and Paranaque in Metro Manila; Guagua in Pampanga; Gumaca and Dolores in Quezon; Cardona, Angono, and Taytay in Rizal; Marabut in Samar; and San Antonio, Cabangan, Subic, and Olongapo City in Zambales.
