THE Philippines now has 3,992 new lawyers!
The Supreme Court on Friday announced the results of 2022 Bar examinations and said 43.47 percent passed the test.
Of the 9,183 examinees, a total 3,992 were able to hurdle the licensure examination, according to Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, who chaired the bar.
This represented a much lower passing rate than the 72.78 percent for the 2021 exam.
UP dominates top 10
Instead of the usual top 10, the Supreme Court released top 30 bar passers who garnered the highest total scores.
The top five examinees came from the University of the Philippines College of Law.
The rest of the top 10 consisted of one graduate from the University of San Carlos, one from San Beda College Alabang, and three from the Ateneo de Manila University.

Among the schools with more than 100 first-time bar exam takers, San Beda University had the highest passing rate with 97.58 percent. This is followed by Ateneo de Manila University with 97.24 percent, the University of the Philippines with 95.02 percent, the University of San Carlos with 93.47 percent, and the University of Santo Tomas with 79.87 percent.
Use your power wisely
Caguioa called on the new lawyers to use their profession to bring hope to the people and honor to the country.
“May your new success be but a door that opens to ever meaningful opportunities for you to breathe life to the law in a way that is consistent with its spirit and in a manner that brings hope to the people and honor to your country, which would well and truly give this accomplishment what perhaps may be its highest worth,” Caguioa said.
As for those who did not make it, he said this should not discourage them.
“The Bar examinations can never approximate what you are worth,” he said.
“Allow this setback to be only temporary, but your will to overcome the Bar examinations unchanged. The Bar examinations cannot begin to, nor will it ever measure, the weight of your convictions, the strength of your courage, the depths of your compassion, and the height of your dream,” he added.
Emotional moments
Prior to the announcement of the results, many of the bar examinees and their friends and loved ones trooped to the Supreme Court compound in Manila to await their fate.

Once the results were out, the compound was filled with screams and tears from the joyful as well as the heartbroken examinees.
The most recent Bar examination is the second to be held digitally across multiple testing sites nationwide.
The series of exams were held on November 9, 13, 16, and 20 last year in regionalized and digitized setups in various locations nationwide.
Oath-taking and roll-signing of new lawyers will be held on May 2.
The 2023 bar examinations will be held on September 17, 20, and 24.
