University-based theater productions in Metro Manila and Bulacan are gearing up for their stage plays this month.
Tanghalang Batingaw of the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Manila, UP Dulaang Laboratoryo of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, and BulSU Entablado of Bulacan State University will roll up their curtains starting on Friday, July 14.
The following are the performances to watch:
Trahe De Boda
“Ang buhay ba ng isang babae ay umiikot lamang sa pagpapakasal, pagluluwal, at pagbuo ng isang pamilya? Iisa lang ba ang daang dapat tahakin nito?”
Answers to these questions will be sought in Tanghalang Batingaw’s 46th Season Ender Show, Trahe De Boda, written by Kizabelle Aromin and directed by Shaidomar Laco.
Trahe De Boda will center on the experiences of Filipino women in the past. In a video posted by Tanghalang Batingaw on Facebook, Aromin stressed that the play has something to fight for and will be told from the perspective of Filipino women.
Laco, meanwhile, said that the play is not just about women’s empowerment but also a story of resistance and decision-making.
The cast of Trahe De Boda will feature the members of Batch 46 of Tanghalang Batingaw.
The play is open to Lyceans and non-Lyceans, but the ticket reservation for the latter ended last Friday.
Trahe De Boda will run from July 14 to July 15 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. It will be held at the JPL Hall of Freedom.
Tser
Amidst the chaos, would you choose to stay true to your promise of serving the nation or your own safety?
This will be the question that Teacher Rose has to answer in Tser by UP Dulaang Laboratoryo and Theater 143.
The play is about Rose, a teacher at a Bakwit school in Maragusan that is facing worsening violence against Lumads and teachers. Teacher Rose will be torn between leaving the school or staying with her students, after learning that one of her four students was kidnapped.
Tser is written by Maynard Manansala and directed by Andi Camille Cristi.
The show will also be open to the public. The registration for non-UPD students has been closed, but the production said that they may allow walk-ins in case some viewers who reserved tickets do not attend.
Tser will be staged on July 18 AT 5:00 p.m. The venue is Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan, Pavilion 3, Palma Hall, in the Diliman campus.
DEKADA: Bumagsak, Bumangon, Bumawi
BulSU Entablado will celebrate how people keep moving forward despite every hurdle that comes along their way in their play, DEKADA: Bumagsak, Bumangon, Bumawi.
“Dumating tayo sa punto na lahat tayo ay bumagsak sa buhay natin; Pero bumangon pa din tayo at hinarap ang bukas. At ngayon bumawi at nagpapatuloy,” the production said in its Facebook post.
This is in celebration of the production’s 10th Summer Workshop and 4th Sining Paslit Theater and Dance Workshop.
It was not indicated in the announcement if the play is also open to the public, but BulSU Entablado invited the student body to watch DEKADA: Bumagsak, Bumangon, Bumawi on July 16 at 3:00 p.m., which will be staged at Valencia Hall.
