ROCK band Sandwich is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and OPM fans are hoping that the group won’t stop coming out with iconic hits and heart-thumping beats.

They seem to be getting their wish, as the band is marking its silver anniversary with new single Nyare, the first of the four tracks that it will be releasing this year.

Formed in 1998 by former Eraserheads drummer Raimund Marasigan and Diego Castillo, the band came together simply because the members wanted to work together to create music.

Castillo went on to recruit other members such as Mike Dizon and Myrene Academia. Marc Abaya also eventually joined the group and became its vocalist. After his departure in 2005, Marasigan took over the vocals.

Although existing simultaneously with Marasigan’s original group, Sandwich offered a different sound with a heavier and more head-banging vibe, which earned the band its own fanbase.

K-Pop is no longer just influencing global trends — it’s.

The band’s talents also netted it nominations and awards.

After eight studio albums, an EP, commercial jingles and collaborations, Sandwich continues to endure and shows no sign of turning stale.

Let’s look back at some of the iconic hits of Sandwich that got noticed by award-winning bodies.

  1. Sugod

If there’s one song Sandwich fans headbanged to the most, that would have to be the 2006 barkada hit Sugod.”

With the lines, “Sugod, mga kapatid, tayo ay magsama-sama. Iwagayway na ang bandera, rock ‘n’ roll hanggang umaga!”, the song is the perfect climax to any party or live performance.

In 2006, the music video for Sugod won five major awards at the 2006 MTV Pilipinas Video Awards including Video of the Year, Best Director and Best Editing. It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the NU Rock Awards.

Also, it was nominated as “Favorite Song” in the Myx Music Awards in 2007.

  1. Food for the Soul

For teens of the early 2000s, Sandwich’s hit Food for the Soul is definitely part of their rock playlist. With Marc Abaya’s powerful vocals, the song is a prime example of the signature headbanging rock of the decade.

It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the NU Rock Awards in 2001.

  1. Betamax

Another Sandwich classic is the 2008 hit Betamax, which is basically a throwback to the days of old school music.

The intro of the song speaks of nostalgia, with the lines “Wala pa nung MYX, wala pa nung MTV. Wala pa nung internet. Wala pa nung ipod o MP3. Wala pa nung cable. Wala pa nung cellphone. Wala pa ring cd o dvd. Meron lang Betamax.”

Betamax won Song of the Year at the NU Rock Awards 2008 and was also included in the Top 10 hit songs of WikiPilipinas.org also in that year.

  1. Humanda Ka

The song Humanda Ka features a techno sound that’s perfect for soundtripping. With its lyrics about strength, courage, and heroism, it became part of the soundtrack of online game Tantra and the TV show Rounin.

It proved its commercial appeal after being nominated for Song of the Year at the NU Rock Awards in 2005.

  1. DVDX

The song DVDX is another perfect example of Sandwich’s signature catchy, techno sound. Released in 2006, the track, which is not a love song, a sentimental barkada song or an emo song, is simply perfect if you want a good jam.

In 2007, the song won Best Music Video at NU Rock Awards. It was also nominated for Song of the Year in the same show.
