25 Pinoys from quake-stricken Turkey arrive in PHL

The first batch of Filipino repatriates from Turkey, composed of 25 persons or nine families, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 Monday afternoon past 4 pm on board Qatar Airways flight QR 932.

Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) welcomed Filipino families upon arrival at the airport.

Pinoys with kids repatriated

The nine Filipino families from southern Turkey were repatriated to the Philippines following the destructive Magnitude 7.8 earthquake, the Philippine Embassy in Ankara said.

Philippine Ambassador to Ankara Mariel Algabre in Ankara said the DFA funded the repatriations of Filipinos. Other repatriation efforts are now being arranged for the following days.

27 Pinoys still at Embassy shelter

The Philippine Embassy shelter in Ankara currently houses 27 more Filipino families affected by the deadly earthquake.

Ambassador Algabre recently said that the Embassy continues to address the concerns of our affected Filipinos, including extending their stay at the shelter and finding the appropriate housing and financial programs and other services offered by the Turkish government and non-government organizations.

DFA and the DMW reportedly gave financial aid and relief goods to 77 more overseas Filipinos in Turkey who were affected by the earthquake. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Turkey and Syria, leaving at least 46,000 people dead.

Filipino humanitarian contingent to Turkey

The Philippine government sent 82 Philippine Inter-Agency Contingent (PIAC) members, including a medical team, to Turkey to help in the search and rescue mission.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said the team was able to assess and clear 36 buildings from February 10 to 15 before being placed on standby while members of the medical team continued to help victims of the earthquake.
