Vintage community market to be set up in Escolta for a day

by Joanna Deala

Thrifting has become popular nowadays as many ukay-ukay vlogs surface online.

Some shared the clothes they hauled, while others did the ukay challenge of finding quality goods for a certain budget.

Such videos piqued the interest of the younger generation, with many of them posting about their thrifting experience.

In case you also want to join in the hype train but are not sure yet where to go, this vintage community market might be the place for you.

Second chances

Vintage stores will gather together this Sunday, May 28, to set up a flea market called Second Chances.

Second Chances is presented by Souvenir shop Glorious Dias Filipino Vintage, clothing shop Season Pass, and antique shop The Vintage Junkie Manila. They partnered with creative hubs HUB: Make Lab and Pineapple Lab, and the First United Building.

“[A] collaboration with our friends from [E]scolta! Second Chances breathes new life to everything second hand and finding new homes to one-of-a-kind pieces,” Season Pass said in an Instagram post.

Interestingly, the market will be held in the historic First United Building, an art deco building that has been built in Escolta street in Binondo, Manila since 1928.

It will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Participating stores

Thrifters will have more chances to find second-hand gems as more shops will be participating in the flea market.

Among them are Thrift Tzu, Lost Hippie, RIOtaso Clothing, Setenta & Co., and Fits Ya Good.

“Meet the merchants! From retro housewares to 70s tees, Y2K to bohemian steeze and reworked fashions – sheeesh!” HUB: Make Lab said.

An array of items such as clothes, digital cameras, accessories, rattan goods, and jewelries will be available at the Sunday market.

‘90s Kabaklaan exhibition

A pop-up exhibition by ‘90s Kabaklaan will also be set up at the flea market.

“Rumour has it there will be a pop-up exhibition of 90s KABAKLAAN alongside a bonggacious buffet of vintage vendors with good goods from the swinging 60s thru to the Y2K love bug era!” Glorious Dias said.

Owned by magazine collector Victor, ‘90s Kabaklaan is an Instagram page dedicated for vintage contents from ’90s magazine pages to memes from old television shows and movies.

Currently, the page has over 82,000 followers.
