Top 3 Asian destinations for single Filipino travelers

by Bryan Gadingan

ARE you alone during the holidays? Looking for something to do after Singles’ Day?

Worry no more, as Agoda, a digital travel company, released a survey on the top three most popular destinations visited by solo Filipino tourists.

Internationally, Tokyo, Japan was the most popular destination for singles, followed by Bangkok, Thailand, in second place, and Seoul, South Korea, in third place.

Solo Filipino tourists, on the other hand, prefer to visit Singapore, Bangkok and Tokyo, as these three cities are the most popular among Filipinos, based on data collected by Agoda from mid-April to mid-October 2023.

“As Agoda, we have talked a lot about family travel this year but with travel numbers up compared to recent years, we’ve also seen more solo travel,” said Enric Casals, Agoda’s associate vice president.

“Going on a solo trip is arguably one of the best gifts one can give oneself. Whether it is to explore new cultures, to make new friends, or to reconnect with those across the globe, going on a trip alone often requires stepping out of one’s comfort zone. But those who set out on an adventure of their own are usually rewarded with the creation of the most special memories,” he said.

Traveling by your lonesome, as they say, is a sort of self-love as it allows you to go at your own pace and plan your own itinerary. Finally, it gives you some alone time with your thoughts.

Regardless of the love-hate relationship that Filipinos have with traveling alone, it cannot be denied that it’s beneficial in that it allows you to discover new things about yourself and meet new people along the way, making you realize that doing things by yourself is okay, too.

Here are more reasons why you might consider taking a solo trip, particularly to the following locations:

Singapore

Singapore or “instant Asia,” as some would refer to the country, ranks first on the list. The little city-state is well-known for being jam packed with gorgeous items catered to the demands and needs of individual Filipino visitors.

The Lion City lives up to its “concrete jungle” moniker by blending cutting-edge modern buildings with luxuriant greenery. This is most seen at prominent tourist destinations such as Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and the Jewel Changi Airport, which are all quite close to one another, pleasing Filipinos’ inner shopaholics.

Singapore’s cultural diversity is best represented by its food, which fills the stomach while leaving more money in the vacation budget.

Solo visitors can alternatively spend the night at Boat Quay, where the vibrant riverside atmosphere is ideal for meeting new people and enjoying Singapore’s exciting nightlife.

Bangkok, Thailand

Second on the list is Bangkok, which is often regarded as one of the world’s most accessible destinations for solitary travelers. Without a doubt, the country ranks second on the list of Filipino solo travelers.

There are numerous reasons to visit Bangkok. From its rich cultural legacy and historic temples like the grand Wat Arun or the landmark Wat Phra Kaew, to its delicious street delicacies and vibrant vendors in the Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok has it all.

Furthermore, Filipino lone travelers will not experience cultural shock in this nearby Southeast Asian metropolis. They can return home with a new acquaintance established on their tour through the city’s friendly people and plethora of solo travelers. Bangkok’s residents have proven to be as welcoming as the city’s climate.

Tokyo, Japan

Last but not least is Japan’s capital city, Tokyo. Tokyo sits at the crossroads of tradition and technology, providing unique travel experiences through these intersections. Tokyo is an ideal blend for traditional yet modern Filipino vacationers.

The city has a busy street life and numerous old temples to visit. It is a wonderful destination for anyone traveling alone, with its world-class cuisine often served in individual cubicles and even in capsule hotels.

Whether it’s strolling around Shibuya’s bustling streets, spending hours in an arcade hall or sampling local street food, Tokyo has something for single Filipino travelers.
