Fellow Millennials and Gen Zs, was there a time when you tuned in to your television screen and waited for your favorite songs to play on this music channel? Then you end up getting late for school just by waiting for the top song of the week.

During the late 2000s to the 2010s, MYX was a popular music channel for Millennials and Gen Zs since they featured the latest songs that cater to youthful MYXers and got to watch and listen to their favorite tunes on TV.

The hosts, or what the channel calls “VJs,” chat a little with the viewers before revealing the trendy songs that can be added to your playlist!

Notable MYX VJ hosts during this time include: Chino Lui Pio, Luis Manzano, Iya Villana, Robi Domingo, Nikki Gil, Bianca Roque (now Brandner), Nel Gomez, and Janine Ramirez.

For a little throwback, here are some tracks that were very popular on the music channel and that you might have heard playing in jeepneys, UV Express, malls, buses, and radio stations.

Jet Lag by Simple Plan ft. Natasha Bedingfield

This song was released in 2011 and according to Starmometer, Jet Lag reached the Top 7 spot in 2011 for the MYX Daily Top 10 on October 4, 2011. The following week on October 15-21, 2011, the song became #1 in its first week in the MYX International Top 20.

This song is very rock and roll and talks about long distance relationships. We all know that Pinoys are very drawn to dramatic and emotional love songs and this might have contributed to why the song rose to fame.

Simple Plan held their Get Your Heart on Tour here in Manila on January 12, 2012.

Pinoys love, love, love songs about heartbreak. Many listeners cried and raved over this song, remembering their first heartbreak and what-ifs.

On March 18, 2012, news was reported that the music video became the number one track from March 14-23, 2012, on Pinoy MYX Countdown.

Even though this song was released years ago, Pinoys keep coming back to it, and the singer, Krissy, even commented on the music video last year with a funny comment to her listeners.

Jeepney Love Story by Yeng Constantino

This song will definitely make you feel like you’re in a movie, catching feelings at first sight with your co-passenger and hoping that the trip lasts longer. Yeng Constantino’s lines, “ayoko na pumara kahit san mapunta, ayoko na pumara kung ikaw ang kasama,” are the song’s trademark and iconic lines.

After a month of its release, the song earned a spot in the MYX Daily Top 10, placing #9 on October 25, 2010. Then, it reached #8 in the MYX Hit Chart from October 24-31, 2010, and #3 in the Pinoy MYX Countdown from October 23-30, 2010.

Mine by Taylor Swift

Recall when Taylor Swift’s country pop music era was the trademark and genre back then.

The music video shows Taylor Swift falling in love with a waiter in a small town. Even though she was scared to fall in love due to marital issues with her parents, she took a chance and fell in love. Though they had some arguments, they promised each other not to repeat Taylor’s parents’ mistake.

It’s a cute, heartwarming song for those who want to take a chance on love.

The track became #1 in MYX Daily Top 10 on September 13, 2010, as reported by Starmometer. It also dominated other MYX music charts like MYX Hit Chart, earning #1 for two weeks (September 26-October 2, 2010), and for four weeks in the MYX International Top 20 on September 25, 2010.

Somebody to Love Remix by Justin Bieber ft. Usher

Throwback to when Bieber fever was real for highschoolers.

When Bieber was only 16 years old, his hit song Somebody to Love topped the MYX charts. On July 26, 2010, the song reached #1 in MYX Daily Top 10 with a total of 14.35% listeners, #8 on MYX International Top 20 from July 24-30, 2010, and reached the MYX Hit Chart from July 25-31, 2010, placing #12 out of 20 songs.

Sorry, Sorry Answer by Super Junior

A quick backtrack to one of the legends of Korean pop music: Super Junior topped the MYX charts back in 2010. Though the song was released in 2009, Sorry, Sorry Answer rose to fame in the Philippines and reached #1 in the MYX Hit Chart and the MYX International Top 20. The song reached #2 in the MYX Daily Top 10.

The song is a ballad version of the pop song, Sorry, Sorry, but has no choreography.

FIRE by 2EN1

This song might have paved the way for K-pop music to be recognized more in the Philippines.

Thanks to Sandara Park, our Pambansang Krung-krung, becoming a member of 2EN1, Pinoys supported her as a K-Pop idol by listening to her group’s songs, streaming their music videos, and learning their dance.

From June 5–11, 2009, the song placed #2 in the MYX Hit Chart, with David Archuleta’s Touch My Hand as #1. On July 6, 2009, Fire reached #1 in the MYX Daily Top 10, then #2 on July 7, 2009.

Crush by David Archuleta

After finishing in 2nd place in American Idol Season 7, David Archuleta released his debut single, Crush. The 17-year-old Archuleta captured the hearts of teen listeners, which helped him gain popularity for his song and talent.

Due to his popularity, Crush won Favorite International Music Video at the MYX Awards 2009.

Hey Daydreamer by Somedaydream

If you remember that Cornetto commercial with the lyrics “you and me sitting on a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G” this is that song.

Due to its synthpop style and catchy beat, the song became a hit, especially when it was featured in the commercial.

Rez Toledo, singer-songwriter and producer of Somedaydream performed the song in Myx MO! Back in 2011.

What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction

How could we forget our favorite English-Irish boy group?

After One Direction won 1st place in the X-Factor UK Season 7 in 2010, the group released their debut song, What Makes You Beautiful, in 2011.

Starmometer reported that One Direction ruled MYX’s charts for two consecutive weeks. It earned the #1 spot in the MYX International Top 20 from December 10–16, 2011, and the #2 spot in the MYX Hit Chart from December 11–17, 2011.
