This Indian tech company has a daily reminder for employees: ‘Please go home!’

OFTENTIMES, seeing a warning message in your computer screen triggers high levels of anxiety as it is typically associated with a danger or threat. But this technology company in India reinvented this word into something positive.

Starting with a bright red “Warning” sign, devices in SoftGrid Computers display a reminder to its employees to log off their workstations and go home.

“Your shift time is over. The office system will shut down in 10 mins. Please go home,” the notice read.

According to one of its employees, Tanvi Khandelwal, the company’s HR Specialist and the one who shared this contemporary organizational policy, this is the reality of their workplace.

She said that their employer is an advocate of work-life balance, which pushed him to carry out an approach where employees’ desktops will be automatically locked once their shift ends to compel them to leave work on time.

“This is not a promotional and imaginary post! This is the reality of our office,” Khandelwal wrote in a now viral LinkedIn post with almost half a million reactions.

She also emphasized that they do not need any Monday Motivation or Fun Friday to improve their moods because of the healthy work environment they belong to.

Aside from logging out from work on the dot, Khandelwal also said that they do not receive calls or emails outside of business hours.

Importance of work-life balance

Work-life balance refers to the harmony between a person’s professional and personal life. It involves finding a way to weigh up the demands of work with the need for personal time, family time, and other activities.

Maintaining balance in work is important because it provides individuals with a wide array of benefits that keep their well-being in good trim.

Achieving work-life balance is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health, as well as for enjoying a fulfilling personal life. 

According to Forbes, work-life balance is crucial in maintaining a healthy work environment. It can help reduce stress, increase productivity, and improve overall well-being.

A proper balance of an individual’s personal and professional life is also helpful in preventing burnout.

According to Harvard Business Review, employee burnout is a common dilemma among companies worldwide. 

This organizational challenge costs around $125 billion to $195 billion annually in healthcare spending in the United States because of the psychological and physical problems burnout incur to employees.

Another stumbling block that can be avoided by a healthy work-life balance is stress.

Chronic stress is among the many health issues that employees acquire when they are overworked. This serious health problem often leads to digestive troubles, hypertension, chronic aches and pains, heart problems, and mental health problems.

This doesn’t only hamper a worker’s productivity and efficiency at work but also poses a risk in their well-being.

With this, it is crucial for workers to be reminded to take good care of themselves and to prioritize their health over anything.

While different attitudes and approach on work-life balance will continue to advance in the future with generational, economic, and cultural shifts, it is also important for companies and organizations to ensure that their employees can still have time for themselves as this increase their happiness, productivity, creativity, and can even lead to career advancement and improved physical health.
