BLACKPINK Jennie says sorry for vaping indoors following immense backlash

BLACKPINK Jennie says sorry for vaping indoors following immense backlash

by Gaby Agbulos

LAST July 9th, Odd Atelier released a statement of apology on X, discussing a recent viral video that showed BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim vaping indoors.

Odd Atelier, Jennie’s agency, has since apologized to those who felt uncomfortable and were disappointed due to her actions. They also stated that she acknowledges and deeply regrets her mistake.

This incident was seen in a YouTube video entitled “A Moment in Capri with Jennie,” wherein Jennie was vaping while her hair and makeup were being done. The clip has since been removed from the video.

Many then criticized her given how close she was to her stylists’ faces in the video, thus possibly inhaling the smoke from her vape. Others also raised the legality of her actions as, according to All K-Pop, Italy has had a smoking ban in indoor public places since January, 2005.

The rest of the video showed her getting ready for Jacquemus’ show in Italy, marking Jennie’s runway debut.

Reports from the Taipei Times said that the Seoul foreign ministry also received a formal complaint, requesting the South Korean Embassy, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to probe Jennie due to this incident.

Fans come to Jennie’s defense

While others may have shown disappointment given Jennie’s actions, many have come to her defense on social media platforms like X and Instagram.

“You don’t have to apologize to people at all, you are an adult woman and have the right to do what you want!,” one fan wrote on Jennie’s most recent Instagram post.

“I will accept any of your choices and support you.”

Others reminded the artist to ignore the haters, as Blinks would always love and support her. They also stated that her vaping is none of their business.

In 2021, it was estimated by Emerald Insight that there were around 82 million people who vaped worldwide. It seems, now, that Jennie Kim is one of them.

Philippine setting

In the Philippines, it’s almost impossible not to pass by someone vaping as you walk outside, or to not see at least one vape shop on the side of the street.

Is the scrutiny that she has faced, then, justified? Or is it only a big deal because it’s someone famous?

More than this, is this only happening because she’s a woman?

Many online have likened this situation to when Jeon Jungkook, a member of BTS, was caught smoking outside. Like Jennie, he was filmed, and the footage was then posted online.

Instead of receiving as much hate as Jennie has, however, people immediately came to the artist’s defense, telling haters to leave him alone.

There are even some who swooned over Jungkook’s video, talking about how attractive and cool it is that he smokes. Others have even made edits of his viral smoking video, receiving thousands of likes and shares online after being posted.

All of these artists are, of course, entitled to do whatever they want as they are adults. One can’t help but wonder, however, why the backlash for such similar acts is so much worse for a woman than it is for a man.
