Malou Talosig-Bartolome

Senior Deputy Editor

Education: De La Salle University, AB Communication Arts (graduate)

University of the Philippines, Diliman, Master of Arts International Relations (units)

Malou Talosig-Bartolome is a veteran journalist with over 25 years of experience in both print and broadcast industries, specializing in diplomatic reporting. She started as a police and defense reporter in 1994, then became the foreign affairs reporter for TODAY newspaper until 2002. As a diplomatic beat reporter, she was assigned to cover summits of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC), and Asean-Europe Meeting (Asem) in major capitals. She was also invited to interview heads of states and attend short fellowship journalism and diplomacy programs in the US, Europe, and Asia.

Malou also spent 15 years in the broadcast industry as senior news editor of GMA Network Inc. She headed the regional and international news desk, with over 100 stringers nationwide and in key cities worldwide. She was one of those who first implemented Digital News Gathering in the Philippines during the late 2000s, at a time when newsrooms were still operating in analogue format. The GMA News Department earned international accolades for coverages she helped produce as part of the Newsdesk. This includes the most coveted Peabody Award for the GMA breaking news coverage of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) and the bronze medal at the New York Film Festival for GMA News Special coverage of the 2nd Gulf War in Iraq.

A mother of two grade-schoolers, Malou took time off from the grueling daily grind of the newsroom. She found a new calling in helping friends and family handle their money with her financial advisory business. She is a licensed insurance agent, Chartered Wealth Advisor and will soon become a Registered Financial Planner. During the pandemic, she also started a vlog titled Usapang CQ, or Community Quarantine, to help OFWs struggling with their finances and other labor problems.

Apparently, journalism found its way and came back to her (like an itch that won’t go away). She started writing again in late 2021 for Business Mirror. Now, she is one of the deputy news editors of Republic Asia.
