Rains may dampen Chinese New Year’s Eve celebration

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

FOR those who are planning to go out for family dinners or watch dragon dances for tonight’s Chinese New Year’s Eve celebration. don’t forget your umbrellas.

State weather forecasting agency Pagasa said the Shearline, Northeast Monsoon and the trough of the Low Pressure Area will bring rains to most parts of the country today, January 21.

Quezon, Bicol on red flood alert

But Chinese revelers in Quezon and all provinces of the Bicol region need to be extra careful today.

Pagasa have placed Bicol and Quezon in “extreme” general flood warning today following days of experiencing torrential rains brought by the Shearline and the Northeast Monsoon.

The Shearline is expected to dump moderate to at times heavy rains in the Bicol Region today.

Shearline is the streak of rain clouds that forms from the convergence of cool winds from the north and hot winds from the south.

Quezon, meanwhile, is being battered with moderate to at times heavy rains too, by the Northeast Monsoon.

Pagasa hyrdologists monitored that the water levels in rivers of those areas have reached critical levels. A red flag warning is up, or the threat of flooding is “extreme” near the rivers or low-lying areas:

Northeast Monsoon

Aside from Quezon, the prevailing Northeast Monsoon continues to dump moderate to at times heavy rains over Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, Rizal, Laguna, Mindoro Provinces, Marinduque, and Romblon.

Dragon dances may not be as affected in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, and the rest of Central Luzon and CALABARZON. The weather will be generally favorable to New Year’s Eve celebration. Only light rains are expected.

Low Pressure Area

Pagasa has recently spotted another Low Pressure Area which is located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

The trough of the LPA, however, is bringing rain clouds to Visayas and Mindanao.

Pagasa said there may be scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Caraga and Davao Region. The amount of rainfall may also be heavy at times, so watch out for possible flash floods or landslides.

Localized thunderstorms

The rest of the country will have isolated rainshowers or thunderstoms, too. That is brought by the localized thunderstorms.
