SPOTLIGHT: P-Pop group G22 brings girl power to the music scene

by Joshua Gerona

Ready, Aim, Shoot! We are G22!

LIKE many powerful women musicians worldwide, P-Pop group G22 also hopes to bring girl power to the music scene, particularly to the fast-emerging P-Pop industry.

Named after the Glock 22 pistol, Cornerstone Entertainment’s official girl group entered the P-pop scene in February 2022, originally composed of four members—AJ, Alfea, Jaz, and Bianca

Under the mentorship of singer-songwriter KZ Tandingan, the group released their debut track, “BANG!,” talking about ‘shooting down’ all the negativities that hinder women from flourishing.

The empowering single served as a good start for the group to realize their vow of promoting and celebrating women’s empowerment in the music industry.

In April, the group showed the public the fruit of their rigorous training by performing at the 2022 PPOPCON held at New Frontier Theater and Smart Araneta Coliseum.

A month later, G22 made their first-ever comeback with the track “Babalik,” once again underscoring women’s power throughout the song.

They would release two more songs (Defy and Takin’ Over) before concluding their 2022 musical journey.

In celebration of their first anniversary in the industry, the group released their comeback single, “Boomerang,” in February 2023.

In September of the same year, Cornerstone Entertainment announced the departure of Bianca due to ‘personal and family matters.’

G22 would continue as a trio, ushering in a new era for the group with the release of “Musika” and “Loka.”

Dubbed the “Female Alphas of Philippine Pop,” the trio has remained loyal to their advocacy of empowering women through music throughout their entire career.

In a world of hustle culture and cyberharassment, the group hopes their music would serve as an inspiration for women to find their own ‘alpha’ self—strong and confident.

Last month, it was revealed that G22 would take part in the Chinese survival show “Show It All” along with the nation’s girl group BINI. The show is hosted by former EXO member Lay Zhang.

The group will release its upcoming single “One Sided Love” on April 19. The new track, according to the group, has a sweet melancholic vibe, talking about unrequited love towards someone.
