LIST: Celebrity parents supportive of their LGBTQIA+ children

by Izel Abanilla

Coming out as gay back then was challenging due to the fear of experiencing discrimination or, worse, seeing your family disown you.

But over the years, more people, including celebrity parents, have come to accept the LBGTQIA+ community.

Let’s take a look at these famous parents who are truly accepting of their LGBTQIA+ children.

  1. Sheryn Regis

Recently, Sheryn Regis’ daughter, Sweety Echiverri, opened up about her sexual preference in a video message for her mother while guesting on ABS-CBN’s Magandang Buhay.

Asked what she felt when her daughter came out, the singer said, “I am so proud of her for having an open mind para sa lahat ng gender, kung anumang sitwasyon ng buhay naiintindihan niya sa murang edad.”

Sheryn, too, came out not too long ago and is now in a relationship with vlogger Mel de Guia.

  1. Sharon Cuneta

Soon after her youngest daughter came out as queer, Megastar Sharon Cuneta immediately professed support for Miel Pangilinan on Instagram.

“All I will say is that I LOVE ALL MY CHILDREN AND WILL SUPPORT THEM IN THEIR LIVES AND CHOICES. I am proud of my children, and ALL MY CHILDREN ARE PERFECT. I love you, my Miel,” she said.

She also said that she’s aware of the negative reactions her daughter’s admission drew online, but the veteran actress shrugged them off and stressed that what matters is her daughter’s happiness.

  1. Ian Veneracion

A cool father that he is, Ian Veneracion sent the internet abuzz when he talked about how he reacted when his daughter, Deirdre, came out as lesbian at 16.

Also on Magandang Buhay, Veneracion recalled how nervous “Dids” was when she came out to him, but he nonetheless assured her that there was nothing to worry about.

  1. Dwayne Wade

American professional basketball player Dwayne Wade said in an interview that his 15-year-old daughter Zaya had already known she was gay since she was 3 years old.

Instead of feeling negative, the Miami Heat player instead contemplated how he could show support to his daughter.

  1. Jamie Lee Curtis

In 2021, Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis revealed that her youngest child was transgender. As a supportive mom, the Freaky Friday star has been very candid about her love for her 25-year-old daughter Ruby.
