PAGASA issues El Niño alert, urges agencies to take precautionary measures

by Carl Santos

State-run weather agency PAGASA on Tuesday, May 2, raised an El Niño alert and asked government agencies to take measures to mitigate the effects of the weather phenomenon associated with drier conditions.

“Recent conditions and model forecasts indicate that El Niño may emerge in the coming season (June-July-August) at 80% probability and may persist until the first quarter of 2024. With this development, the PAGASA El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Alert and Warning System is now raised to El Niño alert,” PAGASA said in a statement.

Among the possible impacts of El Niño are dry spells and droughts in some areas of the country, PAGASA said, as well as above-normal rainfall conditions during the Southwest Monsoon season (Habagat).

“PAGASA will continue to closely monitor the development of this ENSO phenomenon. All concerned government agencies and the general public are encouraged to keep monitoring and take precautionary measures against the impending impacts of El Niño,” it said.

The Marcos administration is expected to form a team that will focus on mitigating the effects of El Niño.

PAGASA earlier said El Niño may persist until next year.
