P-pop group BINI highlights women empowerment in debut EP

by Joanna Deala

IT’S March 8, which means it’s International Women’s Day!

It’s the time when we celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in our history, culture and society. The focus of this celebration is also women’s rights and gender equality.

P-pop girl group BINI, also known as the “nation’s girl group,” has their own way of marking International Women’s Day: to promote their advocacy for women’s rights by releasing their debut extended play (EP) “Talaarawan” today.

“Talaarawan” is a diary-inspired EP that featured six tracks: “Karera,” “Salamin, Salamin,” “Pantropiko,” “Ang Huling Cha Cha,” “Na Na Nandito Lang,” and “Diyan Ka Lang.”

Different emotions and narratives were expressed by BINI—composed of Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna and Sheena—through these songs.

For the group’s main rapper Aiah, International Women’s Day is the “perfect” date to release their first EP, to celebrate and acknowledge all the women who worked hard for the album, including themselves.

“I think it’s perfect po na March 8 ilalabas yung EP namin because it’s Women’s Month, and kasi there’s really a group of women who are involved with making this a.k.a us, BINI, and not just us but the whole team BINI,” she told republicasia during the media launch for “Talaarawan.”

Aiah said the girl group aims to inspire women through their EP.

“Even if a lot of people perceive us as women na very emotional, because of this EP that we have, we get to make use of our emotions through the songs. So, I hope they take inspiration [from] that. Use it to a good advantage na you can use so much of your talent as a woman,” the member said.

Through “Talaarawan,” the group’s leader Jhoanna wants their fans, especially young female BLOOMs, to realize their “value and worth.”

Karamihan din po kasi ng supporters namin young female BLOOMs, and we just want them to know their value and worth, regardless kung ano man yung sine-set na standard and expectations ng mga tao sa kanila,” she said.

She told the fans, “Just continue what you’re doing! You’re doing good!”

Jhoanna also reminded them not to forget to celebrate their achievements as they strive for excellence.

“Enjoy lang, enjoy mo lang yung kabataan kasi masaya siya. Kung pwede lang hindi kami tumanda agad, ‘di ba?” she added.

True to this, BINI made certain to bring youthful and vibrant energy to their first EP.

‘Talaarawan’ EP

One track that speaks about living in the moment and enjoying life is “Karera.” The song reminds listeners that there’s no need to rush in life because everyone has their own pace and time.

“Salamin, Salamin,” meanwhile, is probably dedicated to the delulu (shortened slang for delusional) nation as it talks about the feeling of daydreaming about a potential crush.

It’s the same kilig feeling in “Pantropiko,” which exudes the feeling of falling in love in summer.

But love is not always rainbows and butterflies. People will also have to deal with challenges and complications of love, which are tackled in the song “Ang Huling Cha Cha.”

A person should not forget that despite these challenges, they will always have a shoulder to lean on—and that’s what “Na Na Nandito Lang” wants to tell listeners.

The last track, “Diyan Ka lang,” is about appreciating someone who has always been there for them as they face obstacles.

“Talaarawan” is composed of BINI’s old and new songs. “Karera” and “Pantropiko” were first released in 2023 before they were included in the EP.

First concert in June

BLOOMs have another project to look forward to from BINI.

During the media launch, the girl group announced that they will be having their first solo concert on June 28 at the New Frontier Theater.

Further details such as ticket prices and the seat plan have yet to be announced.
