‘One Piece’ anime is getting a remake

by Joanna Deala

HEADS up, fans of “One Piece!” You have something to look forward to again from your favorite Japanese manga and anime series.

On Sunday, December 17, streaming service Netflix announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the anime series will be getting a remake.

It shared a one minute and 27-second teaser video featuring an animator sketching on a white sheet of paper and looking at the first manga volume of “One Piece” for their reference.

The remake announcement was also made during the Jump Festa 2024, a manga and anime convention held annually in Japan.

The new anime adaptation is titled, “The One Piece,” which will begin from the East Blue Saga. The teaser showed a text that read “Romance Dawn,” the first story arc in the manga.

“The One Piece,” which will coincide with the series’ 25th anniversary, will be produced by WIT Studio, the Japanese animation studio behind hit anime series “Attack on Titan” and “Spy x Family.”

“The legend that began 25 years ago spread far and wide across the globe in this interconnected world,” the teaser read.

It continued, “Let’s embark on a journey once again! With an all-new animation team, get ready for a fresh new remake produced by Wit Studio coming to Netflix.”

The clip ended with a voice over of a young boy, speaking in Japanese, “First things first, I’ve got to get a crew. I think about ten men should do.”

Created by Eiichiro Oda, “One Piece” manga series centers on the quest of an enthusiastic young man named Monkey D. Luffy, who dreams of becoming the next Pirate king, and his crew named Straw Hats to find the mysterious treasure called “One Piece.”

As the long-running “Wano Country” arc finally came to an end, the anime series is set to embark on “Egghead Island,” the first arc of “One Piece” final saga. It is set to premiere in January 2024.

Live-action adaptation renewed

“One Piece” fans have been well-fed in recent months because aside from the anime series remake, the hit live-action series of “One piece” was also renewed for a second season.

This was announced by Oda himself in September 2023.

“The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!” Oda said in his announcement video, but he emphasized that it will “take a while to get the scripts ready” for the new season.

The video also featured a new character who will join the Straw Hats pirates in the second season: their doctor, Tony Tony Chopper.

Released in August 2023, the “One Piece” live-action series stars Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

The first season is available on Netflix.
