AT least three people in the town of Pili in Camarines Sur had reportedly died due to “extreme heat,” the local chief executive said on Labor Day.
Pili Mayor Thomas Bongalonta Jr. made the announcement as the heat index scorched at 48 degrees Celsius.
Presently, Bongalonta Jr. said that state weather forecasters are continuously monitoring the situation in the municipality.
This is since the temperatures continue to rise.
The heat index in the town has been averaging 46 degrees Celsius since Friday, April 26.
It went as high as 49 degrees Celsius last Sunday.
“Dito sa amin, 3 empleyado na ang namatay dahil sa itong init. The other day ‘yung aming guard sa traffic ay namatay dahil inatake siya sa puso sa epekto ng init ng panahon at may dalawa pa,” Bongalonta said.
Pili has suspended face-to face classes in the town for public schools.
They likewise said that they were able to distribute assistance to persons with disabilities, solo parents and senior citizens during the dry season.
Dangerous heat index
Meanwhile, dangerous heat levels had affected residents in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, with at least 1 person dying due to heat stroke.
“Sa record ng city health office may naitala na 3. May hypertension na ito. May 1 namatay dahil sa heat stroke as per report ng city health office at may 2 na-ospital nitong last week,” Ronald De Guzman, head of the Dagupan City-CDRRMO, said in an interview aired over TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.
Some 35 areas now with dangerously high heat index levels on Labor Day.
The hottest is at CBSUA-Pili, Camarines Sur with 48 degrees Celsius followed by Dagupan City at 47 degrees Celsius; Aparri, Cagayan at 46 degrees Celsius, Laoag City (45 degrees Celsius), Tuguegarao City (45 degrees Celsius), Puerto Princesa City (45 degrees Celsius), Virac, Catanduanes (45 degrees Celsius), and Masbate City (45 degrees Celsius).
In Metro Manila, NAIA Pasay City, Metro Manila is recorded at 43 degrees Celsius and the Science Garden Quezon City, Metro Manila at 42 degrees Celsius.
