Yulo Brothers Targets 2028 LA Olympics

by Bryan Gadingan

LOOKS like everything is fine for two-time Olympian Carlos and his younger brother Karl Eldrew Yulo, as seen at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards Night on January 27, 2025, at the Manila Hotel.

The Yulo brothers, both noted for their prolific talent in artistic gymnastics, had a special moment at the oldest media organization’s Awards Night, which was led by its president, Nelson Beltran.

Both of them got recognized, with Carlos awarded Athlete of the Year after winning two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Eldrew receiving a special citation from PSA.

Furthermore, they both expressed their long-term goals. While it is still a few years away, it would be incredible to see both of them compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Not One, But Two

As they say, some things are just in the blood, as Carlos and Eldrew both want to represent the Philippines in the 2028 Summer Games, hoping to build on the older gymnast’s success last year.

Carlos, who has been practicing with his brother at The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) Training Center in Intramuros, was pleased to share Eldrew’s impressive growth.

“Malaki po mga naging improvement niya sa training. Gumagaling na po siya sa mga favorite events niya. Super proud po,” says the older Yulo of his younger brother’s growth.

Knowing how difficult it is to qualify for the Olympics, competing with Eldrew on the biggest sporting stage would be one of the highlights of Caloy’s career.

“Posible po and sobrang saya po noon for sure na dalawa kaming makakatungtong ng Olympics at dalawa kaming magrerepresent ng Philippines,” Carlos said during an interview with a media.

“Sobrang exciting at the same time magiging challenging. Para sa amin hindi po madali ‘yung process. Pagpasok doon nagp-pray po ako na makapasok po kaming dalawa,” he added.

Making It Happen

Eldrew is perhaps under more pressure to make this goal a reality than Carlos, who has already established himself as one of the finest in Philippine gymnastics history.

There is no competition, however, as they both want to represent the country. In fact, Carlos has been a great motivation for his brother Eldrew, “Gusto ko rin ‘yung ganyang award, Athlete of the Year.”

“I’m so proud of him. Always. I cried so much noong Olympics, siyempre that’s his dream and also my dream. So parang na-achieve niya rin ‘yung dream ko.”

“I will make everything possible though it seems impossible. I’m gonna push myself through limits everyday,” the younger Yulo went on to say.

Carlos is scheduled to compete in the Asian Championships and the SEA Games in 2025, while Eldrew has a number of tournaments planned, including the World Junior Championships, which will be hosted in the Philippines.
