Quadruple Double Alert: Stefanie Berberabe Makes WMPBL History

by Bryan Gadingan

JUST days after notching a triple-double, Stefanie Berberabe made history on Sunday by recording the first-ever quadruple-double in the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL).

Berberabe etched her name into Philippine basketball lore with the league’s inaugural quadruple-double, becoming one of the few players to ever reach the rare feat.

In only her second game of the tournament, the former National University star powered Tagaytay-Tol to an 82-70 win over Pangasinan-Solar Home with 20 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals.

Quadruple-Double Alert

Berberabe hit the milestone with 2:20 remaining, intercepting Stifanny Larrosa’s bailout pass to Ara Abaca after Larrosa was trapped in the corner, clinching Tagaytay-Tol’s second consecutive win after starting the tournament 0-4.

With the feat, she became just the third player in Philippine professional basketball history—and the first Filipina—to record a quadruple-double.

She now stands alongside Donbel Belano, who had 17 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, and 10 steals in Davao’s win over Nueva Ecija on August 14, 1999, in the MBA.

She also joins Kyt Jimenez, who put up 33 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists, and 11 steals in Sarangani’s 125-74 blowout of Mindoro on October 10, 2022, in the MPBL.

“It’s an honor,” Berberabe, who was coming off a stint with Joondalup Wolves in Australia’s NBL1, said after the win.

“It feels good, I definitely wouldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches. My teammates make it easy to play on the court with them. They make it fun. So it’s just fun to play out here,” she added.

Her performance at the Batangas City Coliseum followed up a strong showing last Sunday, where she tallied 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in Tagaytay-Tol’s 91-63 win over RK Hoops-Quezon City.

Meanwhile, in the NBA, several players have come close to a quadruple-double, but it has only been officially recorded four times, with the most recent occurring over 31 years ago.

Nate Thurmond of the Chicago Bulls was the first to achieve it on October 18, 1974, followed by Alvin Robertson of the San Antonio Spurs on February 18, 1986, Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets on March 29, 1990, and Spurs great David Robinson on February 17, 1994.
