POLE vaulter Ernest John (EJ) Obiena has revealed that the international pole vault event originally planned for the Philippines has been officially cancelled, and that he will instead host a meet-and-greet for his supporters.

Obiena surprised his fans a few days ago when he said that he will miss all of his remaining events in 2024 due to a stress fractured spine sustained during his Silesia Diamond League stint.

Along with this announcement, the world’s third-ranked pole vaulter stated that the injury he experienced may have an impact on his intentions to bring the world’s best pole vaulters to the Philippines on September 20.

Instead, Obiena stated on his social media accounts yesterday that he will hold a meet-and-greet session for his followers at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay Activity Center on September 15.

The Good and Bad News

Obiena greeted his social media supporters with a caveat, stating that he had both good and bad news for them.

“I have good news and bad news. Most people prefer (including myself) to save the best for last, so let me start with the bad news,” the Filipino pole vaulter said.

“The World Athletics sanctioned Pole Vault Competition, which was scheduled for September 20 at Ayala Triangle in Makati City, will be postponed until next year. Details will be announced separately.

“I am truly sorry for this. I and the organizing team worked tirelessly to make this happen; unfortunately, we encountered a few unexpected hurdles, including my fractured vertebrae,” he explained.

Obiena went on to say that he and the organizing team don’t think they can deliver the competition’s full potential. Given their world-class knowledge, he trusted the organizing team’s judgment.

“However, there is some good news! (as the photos pretty much sums it up). I am finally back home, and to show my appreciation to all of you, we will have a meet and greet event,” he excitedly shared.

According to the star’s post, the meet and greet event will include a pole vault exhibit, a panel discussion with world-class athletes, and a variety of other activities, programs, and get-togethers.

“See you all on the 15th of September at 10am in the Ayala Malls Manila Bay Activity Center,” said the Filipino pole vaulter. “I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone soon. See you all there!”

As they say, one door closes and another opens. The anticipated event may have been cancelled, but Obiena found a way to connect with his followers and express gratitude for their support over the years.

The Filipino Olympian continues to inspire the future generation by giving back and bringing fans closer to their sport. While recovering from his injury, it would be a great idea to seek support from his supporters.
