by Bryan Gadingan

HAILING from the streets of Muntinlupa, Philippines, the nation’s brightest basketball talent, Kevin Quiambao, has officially touched down in Sacramento, California, bringing him one step closer to his NBA dream.

A proud member of Gilas Pilipinas, Quiambao continues to honor his pledge to represent the Philippines in every possible way, staying committed to his goal of becoming the first full-blooded Filipino to play in the NBA.

Back in April, Quiambao shared his intention to hold a training camp in the U.S., shortly after wrapping up his rookie season in the Korean Basketball League with the Goyang Sono Skygunners.

“Kaya ako pupunta sa States is for development sa sarili ko. Gusto ko mag-gain ng experience. Gusto ko ma-try kung anong klaseng training, facilities, and development ‘yung pwede ko pang gawin sa sarili ko,” he said on Nico Rocha’s The 6th Man Podcast.

“Wala, try ko lang, wala namang masamang mag-try. Kumbaga, hindi naman ako matatalo rito kapag nag-try ako eh, walang talo sa pag-try ko na ‘to,” he went on to explain.

Welcome to Sactown

Two-time UAAP MVP Kevin Quiambao has officially arrived in Sacramento, as seen on his Instagram post. This marks the start of his much-awaited U.S. training camp in pursuit of a spot in the NBA Summer League.

The versatile 6-foot-7 forward also shared in his latest Instagram story that he has already begun training, showing him on the court with American players in what appeared to be a casual pickup game.

His first stop is Sacramento, where he aims to connect with Kings assistant coach and former Gilas Pilipinas captain Jimmy Alapag for mentorship and guidance on navigating the NBA journey.

Quiambao had an impressive rookie season in the KBL with the Goyang Sono Skygunners, posting averages of 16.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.3 steals across just 23 games.

Though still under contract with Goyang Sono until 2027, Quiambao has openly expressed his NBA dreams and is using the offseason to chase that opportunity, which is highly supported by his mother team.

Should the NBA chance not pan out, he’s expected to return to Korea and rejoin Goyang for the next KBL season. He is also part of the Gilas Pilipinas pool training for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup this August in Saudi Arabia.
