GREATER support is coming, as national athletes and coaches in the Philippines will receive a P5,000 monthly increase in their allowances from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), starting August 2025.
New PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio made the announcement on Tuesday during a general assembly organized by the government sports agency for the Philippine Olympic Committee’s national sports associations, athletes, and coaches.
Gregorio shared that the PSC board approved the allowance hike on the same day. He emphasized that this move is a way to support and show appreciation for the athletes representing the country.
“Today, I met with the PSC board. Across the board, starting August, [additionall P5,000 per athlete, P5,000 per coach,” Gregorio said during the event.
Supporting the Athletes
Before the increase, top athletes received up to P50,000 in monthly allowances. However, the newly appointed PSC chairman explained that the adjustment was necessary, as some athletes were still receiving amounts below the minimum wage.
“We realize that so many athletes still get P10,000 per month. Mas mababa po ‘yun sa minimum wage. How can our athletes survive kung mas mababa yung P10,000,” Gregorio explained.
The PSC chairman also assured that the agency has sufficient funds to cover the allowance increase, which totals around P10 million per month.
“Sinigurado ko po ‘yun,” Gregorio said in a separate interview. “That is P10 million a month. What is P10 million a month for the welfare of our athletes and coaches? A lot of them still receives P10,000 a month, paano ka naman mabubuhay sa P10,000 a month?”
Aside from that, Gregorio announced key initiatives under his term, including restarting the procurement of athletes’ training tracksuits and reopening cafeterias at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, PhilSports Arena, and PSC Baguio with a new food provider.
A 24/7 help desk for athletes will be set up, allowance and DTR processing will be cut to five days, and the PSC Board has approved the IRR for the Philippine Sports Training Center’s development.
