Gold Medalist Diaz Hints at Academic Future with UP Teaching Role

by Bryan Gadingan

HIDILYN DIAZ, the celebrated weightlifter who clinched the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal, might soon be shaping minds instead of lifting weights — this time, as an educator at the University of the Philippines (UP).

A highly accomplished athlete, military officer, and champion of youth and education, Diaz has consistently highlighted the importance of balancing academic growth with athletic achievement. She even completed her degree while training for elite competitions.

Speaking at the recognition ceremony of the College of Human Kinetics at UP Diliman, Diaz hinted at her interest in entering the academic field, expressing a passion for mentoring students by sharing her journey and insights.

A New Path

Though specifics remain uncertain, Diaz enthusiastically spoke about the possibility of teaching at UP, potentially in fields like sports science, physical education, or leadership.

“Masaya akong ibalita sa inyo na excited na ako sa posibilidad na magbahagi pa ako ng aking karanasan at mga natutunan at magturo dito sa inyong unibersidad. Sana matuloy ito,” Diaz said.

Beyond her personal career transition, Diaz’s academic ambitions highlight the increasing acknowledgment of the important role accomplished athletes have in guiding the country’s youth and shaping the future of Philippine sports.

As figures who have triumphed over challenges, developed discipline, and achieved global success, athletes like Diaz wield a kind of influence that goes beyond motivation — they embody real-life lessons in resilience, patriotism, and meaning.

“It’s not just me lifting the weights. We lifted history. We lifted every Filipino’s dream,” she said, looking back at her historical performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Change of Scenery

The Filipino Olympian also emphasized the value of learning about teamwork and service, urging the new graduates to take part in grassroots training programs and other initiatives that benefit local communities.

“Bukod sa pansariling paglago, lagi rin nating isipin kung paano tayo makapagbigay ng kontribusyon sa bayan,” she told the graduates.

“Tandaan ninyo: ang tunay na lakas ay hindi lamang sa pagbuhat ng mabibigat na bagay, kung hindi sa pagtutulungan at paglilingkod sa kapwa,” she went on to say.

On the anniversary of her Olympic victory in 2024, Diaz launched the Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Academy, designed to offer training programs for aspiring weightlifters and athletes aiming to represent the country in future competitions.

According to UP Diliman’s Computerized Registration System (CRS) and the Office of the University Registrar, weightlifting and weight training are offered as elective Physical Education subjects and are required for students majoring in Sports Science.
