KEVIN QUIAMBAO made a significant jump by foregoing his remaining years with the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers and became a professional player. Is he about to make another big leap?
The former UAAP champion and two-time Most Valuable Player had a standout rookie season in the Korean Basketball League (KBL), demonstrating to fans that he is ready for the professional stage.
However, he was unable to deliver on his promise of turning the tide for the ailing club, as the Goyang Sono Skygunners ended eighth with a 19-35 record. Nonetheless, Quiambao became a source of hope for the team.
In the 23 games he played, the 6-foot-6 do-it-all forward averaged 16.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, establishing himself as one of the league’s brightest rising stars.
Where To?
Quiambao is currently back in the country for a short break to recharge after a challenging season. However, Tiebreaker Times claimed that the Gilas Pilipinas member will not stay long before moving on to a new journey.
According to the source, the La Salle standout is scheduled to travel to the United States from June to July, not just for training, but also to compete for a position on an NBA Summer League squad, as stated in his farewell post.
“My college career comes to an end. I will pursue my NBA dream and start my journey by playing professional ball in Goyang Sono SkyGunners and develop my game even more,” Quiambao said in his December 2024 post.
Furthermore, the journey is claimed to be supported by his mother team’s president, Lee Kwangsoo, who would accompany him during his time there. Two major sports backers in the Philippines have also agreed to fund him.
Clear as Day
Despite reports that Quiambao may try out for a spot in the NBA Summer League, it is apparent that his planned trip will not have an impact on his relationship with Goyang, even if he is under contract with the team until 2027.
Gilas Pilipinas fans are also concerned about his availability for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, although his commitment is unaffected because the national team is scheduled to play in Saudi Arabia in August.
While all of these speculations have yet to be confirmed by Quiambao himself, it is very stunning to hear that he is determined to fulfill his lifelong dream without having to give up whatever he now enjoys.
Will Quiambao ever wear an NBA jersey? Only time will tell. However, as shown by his dedication and commitment to hours, days, and months of continuous work, the young star will make it happen in any way he can.
