IT LOOKS like Former Senator Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is certain to make a return to the boxing ring, after stating that he will fight Mario Barrios, stepping out of his retirement.
Pacquiao, a Filipino sports legend, is looking to make a stronger comeback in the boxing ring following his unsuccessful Senate run in the 2025 National and Local Elections, which took place earlier this week on May 12, 2025.
He has opted to end his four-year retirement to fight 29-year-old American boxer Barrios for the WBC welterweight belt in Las Vegas in July of this year.
This announcement coincides with his expected entry into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June, capping a legacy that has inspired millions of boxers not only in the Philippines but around the world.
However, it should be noted that his most recent fight was against Cuban Yordenis Ugas for the WBA welterweight title on August 21, 2021, also in Las Vegas, which he lost by unanimous 12-round decision.
Humble In Defeat
Meanwhile, Pacquiao took the opportunity to thank his supporters, despite the fact that the election turnout was not in his favor this time. Recognizing the need of continuing the struggle for the country.
“Tuloy ang laban. Tuloy ang serbisyo. Para sa Diyos. Para sa bayan. Para sa bawat Pilipino,” Pacquiao said in a statement.
“Mula sa aking puso, maraming salamat. Hindi man ako nagtagumpay sa pagtakbo sa Senado, lubos ang aking pasasalamat sa bawat boto, dasal, at suporta,” he added.
Furthermore, he emphasized that his love for the country and goals of improving the lives of all Filipinos will not change despite the election loss.
