IN A HISTORIC move, the Philippines’ House of Representatives recently approved a bill that will allow Filipino sports stars to be interred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani to its third reading.
A special day for Filipino athletes who have worked tirelessly to bring pride and honor to the country, as the bill submitted on December 17, 2024, is now on its way to final reading.
In a plenary session on Monday, 196 lawmakers overwhelmingly approved House Bill 11229, also known as the proposed Commemoration of Filipino Sports Heroes Act.
Over the years, the definition of a “hero” has evolved in a variety of ways. This time, sportsmen will also be part of it, as is another step in providing an incredible way to honor athletes and coaches for their contributions.
Historic Bill
The proposed bill will acknowledge sports stars’ efforts and sacrifices in bringing glory to the country, as well as their ability to inspire others.
Filipinos who are called “sports heroes” are national athletes, including those with disabilities, who have distinguished themselves in their respective sports while also having good moral character and integrity.
These are athletes who have won medals in the Olympics, Paralympic Games, World Championships, or any other professional competition sanctioned by any of the major sports’ worldwide governing organizations.
It must also be recognized as such by the country’s sports regulating authorities, including the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).
Furthermore, the honor applies to any Filipino athlete, coach, or trainer who has been inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame.
A Step to Recognize Sports
Being an athlete is about more than just winning or losing. What typically receives the least praise are the nights spent fighting self-doubt and the sacrifices made every day they compete.
“Sports stars become heroes when they are admired for their athletic accomplishments,” said Surigao del Norte 2nd district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, who was the one to file the said bill, in an interview with a media.
“As a society, we yearn to feel a connection to them, bask in their success, and pattern our lives after them. Filipino sports icons have this amazing, unique way of making a positive impact in our society.”
“They are our source of inspiration and strength in direst situations and serve as good role models, especially to the youth. With their incredible achievements that brought honor to our country, they deserve a spot at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” he added.
Meanwhile, it is also stated that sports heroes must be Filipino citizens by birth, including those who were naturalized in another country but reacquired Philippine citizenship, resulting in dual citizenship.
Once the bill becomes law, the PSC must establish a screening committee to determine and suggest which athletes are qualified.
