PAGASA eyes 19 tropical cyclones in PAR

by Deanna Macaranas

The PHILIPPINE weather bureau, PAGASA stated that they are eyeing up to 11 to 19 tropical cyclones to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) from the months of July to December, as stated on a forum last Wednesday.

According to climatologist Joey Figuracion, the tropical cyclones in the coming months are more likely to make landfall.

Figuracion also added that storms during this period can enhance ‘Habagat,’ also known as the southwest monsoon.

The said monthly tropical cyclone forecast is as follows:

July 2 or 3

August 2 or 3

September 2 to 4

October 2 to 4

November 2 or 3

December 1 or 2

During the month of June, only one cyclone, Tropical Depression Auring, had formed, persisting for just six hours on June 13 before weakening into low pressure area outside PAR.

The formation of Tropical Depression Auring is considered unusual as the last cyclone that was recorded to form in June was in 2016 with Tropical Depression Ambo.

Usually, the first storms to be recorded in a year first form in January.
