National ID holders get free MRT-3 rides on Wednesdays of August 2025

by Joanna Deala

GOOD news, commuters!

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is offering free rides in Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) for passengers with a National ID on all Wednesdays of August 2025.

In an advisory on Wednesday, the DOTr said National ID holders may avail of free rides from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 6, 13, 20, and 27.

The agency said this move is to promote the use of the National ID for simplified transactions in the public and private sectors, and faster and more inclusive delivery of social services.

To avail of the free train rides, passengers only need to present their National ID, whether a physical card, printed paper, or digital copy version, to the security personnel at the service gate of MRT-3 stations.

Last month, the DOTr launched the cashless payment options at the MRT-3, allowing commuters to use their debit, credit, prepaid cards, and e-wallets to pay for their fare.

Other uses of National ID

Republic Act No. 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, was signed into law in August 2018, establishing a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens in the country.

The National ID is more than just a valid proof of identity. It can be used to apply for social and welfare benefits, including those offered by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth, and Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF).

It can be used to apply for a Philippine passport and driver’s license, as well as in other tax-related transactions.

The National ID also serves as proof of identity for admission to any government hospital, health center, and other related institutions.

The identification card is also accepted for bank-related transactions.
