The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that based on their data, the overwhelming majority of people who were apprehended for littering in Metro Manila last year were cited due to improperly discarding cigarette butts in the street.
According to the MMDA, the Anti-Littering Apprehension Report for 2023 revealed that 79% of those who were cited for littering—or 12,918 individuals—was caught throwing their cigarette butts on the ground.
Meanwhile, the remaining 21% of individuals threw paper (9.4%, or 1,524 individuals), candy wrappers (8.3%, or 1,343 individuals) or other items (2.4%).
“Ang mga basurang ito ay bumabara sa drainage at daluyang tubig. Kaya maging responsableng mamamayan at magtapon lamang sa tamang lagayan,” the MMDA said.
Likewise they also reminded the public that MMDA Regulation No. 96-009 or the Anti-Littering Law prescribes a fine of P500 to P1,000, or community service, for littering.
