POWER distributor Manila Electric Company (Meralco) issued an appeal to netizens to not engage or participate in the ‘bill reveal challenge’ being done in social media as it risks as it risks exposing personal details.
Meralco said that posting their electricity bills on social media, with people jumping on the “bill reveal challenge” to illustrate the jump in power consumption in April.
Many of the Facebook users had been posting their bills which apparently includes personal data like addresses and customer account numbers.
Such details are being exposed to unscrupulous persons, Meralco warns.
“Maaaring gamitin ng mga hacker, scammer, mga masasamang loob, at once na-access na nila ang mga information na yan, ay hindi mo na malaman saan nila dadalhin at anong gagawin nilang di maganda. Kaya mag-ingat po tayo,” Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said.
Zaldarriaga also told customers that the public is free to express their dismay over their bills, but advised to blur personal information and just post the amount instead of posting the actual bill online.
