Magnitude 5.9 quake hits Occidental Mindoro, felt in Metro Manila

A MAGNITUDE 5.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, and was felt in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

The tectonic earthquake occurred 18 kilometers northeast of Lubang at 4:23 p.m. at a depth of 60 km, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Reported intensities:

Intensity V – Lubang, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity IV – Makati City; Quezon City; Taguig City; City of Malolos, City of Meycauayan, Obando, and Plaridel, Bulacan; Floridablanca, Pampanga; San Jose, Batangas; Tagaytay City

Intensity III – Caloocan City; Pasig City; Cuenca and Talisay, Batangas; City of Bacoor, and City of General Trias, Cavite; Rodriguez, Rizal; Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity II – Marikina City; City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan; Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija; Lucban, Quezon; San Mateo, Rizal; Odiongan, Romblon

Intensity I – City of San Fernando, Pampanga; City of San Pedro, Laguna; Mauban, Quezon

The earthquake is not likely to cause any damage, but PHIVOLCS warned that aftershocks could occur. 

In Metro Manila, many employees rushed out of offices to ensure their safety.

Operations of the MRT-3, LRT-1, and 2, as well as the Philippine National Railways, were temporarily suspended in light of the earthquake.
