WALANG PASOK: San Juan, Marikina implements adjusted class schedules due to Heat Index

by Kiko Cueto

THE local city governments of San Juan and Marikina conducted various adjusted class schedules, to safeguard the students against the dangers of extreme heat due to the weather.

Zamora issued Executive Order No. FMZ-193, which implemented an adjusted class schedule for all public schools, including child development centers in the city. This measure will take effect starting March 4, 2025.

Under the new schedule, morning classes will run from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, while afternoon classes will be held from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

The adjustment aims to minimize students’ exposure to the hottest hours of the day (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM) and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. To ensure continuous learning, students will be given supplemental academic activities to complete at home during the remaining school hours.

For private elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities in San Juan, the city government has left the decision to the respective school administrations. However, local officials strongly encourage these institutions to avoid holding in-person classes during peak heat hours for the safety and well-being of students.

Mayor Zamora emphasized that this proactive approach reflects the city’s commitment to prioritizing student health and adapting to changing climate conditions. The local government will continue monitoring the situation and provide necessary support to educational institutions in implementing this policy effectively.

Meanwhile Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro signed Executive Order 05 which declared the suspension of face-to-face classes and the immediate shift to alternative modalities in all levels, private and public schools, should the heat index reach 42 degrees celsius.

“Alinsunod din sa kautusan, inaatasan ang mga namamahala o opisyal ng mga paaralan na siyang mag-aanunsyo ng suspensyon at paglipat sa alternative delivery modality,” he added.
