PNP ready for today’s Black Friday protest vs. corruption

by Kiko Cueto

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) said that they are ready for the Black Friday protest against massive corruption as more than 2,000 key personnel from the National Capital Regional Police Office will be deployed.

‘Black Friday’ protests are set across Metro Manila on Sept. 12 as a sign of disgust by the public over questionable flood control projects.

NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said that they will have personnel in key areas where rallies will be done as the one Mendiola, as well as that near the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) both in Manila.

There will also be rallies along EDSA, as well at the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“Meron na kasi tayong na-monitor na may four na activities by Friday. Ito ang ating pinaghahandaan although hindi pa natin sure yung specific na mga locations. Sa ngayon meron tayo sa Manila, meron din sa EDSA… with regards sa kung sino sa kanila yung may mga permits is wala pa,” Asilo said.

Maximum tolerance will be observed on the designated areas for protests even as she reminded protesters to make sure they do not cause inconvenience.

Meanwhile, PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured that there will be no Nepal like situation in the country.

“We have readied our security plans for dispersal, crowd management, and security. Mayroon na tayong security plans that have been set,” Nartatez said.

“We have also our information na puwede nating pagtuunan or itong information na ito, this is the basis for any operation,” he added.

Nartatez said that the PNP is continuously monitoring the peace, order, and safety across the country.

In Nepal, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli on Tuesday resigned as protests against corruption intensified with demonstrators storming the parliament complex and setting the homes of some politicians on fire.

In Indonesia, political parties nearly two weeks ago agreed to revoke a number of perks and privileges for parliamentarians in a bid to calm anti-government protests.
