PAGASA: Signal No. 1 hoisted due to TS Leon

by Kiko Cueto

STATE weather forecasters announced the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 in parts of Cagayan, Isabela, and Catanduanes, mainly due to the second storm in as many weeks due to Tropical Storm Leon.

Those placed under TCWS No. 1 include: the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Baggao, Santa Teresita, Gonzaga, Peñablanca); the eastern portion of Isabela (Maconacon, Divilacan, Ilagan City, San Pablo, Cabagan, Tumauini, Palanan, San Mariano, Dinapigue); and the northeastern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga).

Under TCWS No. 1, there will be strong winds ranging from 39 to 61 km/h in 36 hours, which may pose minimal to minor threat to life and property.

Leon was estimated to be located at 840 km east of Central Luzon.

It packed maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 105 km/h, and central pressure of 990 hPa.

It is moving westward at 10 km/h.

“Leon maintains its strength as it decelerates over the Philippine Sea,” PAGASA said.

It also said that the outer rainbands of Leon affects the Extreme Northern Luzon depending on how close it will be while moving north northwestward over the Philippine Sea.

Visayas, Mindanao, and the western section of Southern Luzon may also be affected by the trough or extension of Leon.
