MPD announces road closures on Rizal Day

by Bryan Gadingan

IN COMMEMORATION of the 128th anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom, the Manila Police District (MPD) has scheduled road closures beginning at 5:30 AM today, December 30.

Rizal Day is a Philippine national holiday commemorating the life and works of the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal. On this day, Filipinos mark the anniversary of his execution in 1896.

According to MPD, the north and southbound lanes of Roxas Blvd. from Katigbak to TM Kalaw Avenue would be closed beginning at 5:30 AM onwards today, with road openings and closures determined by traffic.

Meanwhile, the police district made sure to establish a re-routing strategy for vehicles driving on this day to avoid severe traffic, as tourists and other travelers are still expected to pass by.

Re-route for Rizal Day

Light vehicles needing to cross via the southbound lane of Roxas Blvd. can enter from Bonifacio Drive and turn left onto P. Burgos, then turn right into Ma. Orosa, then right to TM Kalaw again.

However, for trucks and trailer trucks traveling from Mel Lopez Blvd. (R-10) to the same boulevard, turning left onto Capulong St. and continuing straight into Yuseco St. to Lacson Ave. is the preferred old truck route.

On the other hand, all vehicles traveling from McArthur, Jones, and Quezon Bridge and seeking to access the southbound lane of Roxas Blvd. should take the Round Table to Ma. Orosa or Taft Avenue instead.

Light vehicles intending to pass through from the northbound lane of Roxas Blvd. will have limited re-routing by turning right to TM Kalaw and then left to Ma. Orosa, then left to P. Burgos.

While all vehicles and trailer trucks approaching from the northbound lane are recommended to seek an alternate route and turn right towards Pres. Quirino Avenue to Plaza Dilao.

Parking slots

Aside from the re-routing strategy, the MPD presented a parking plan as well. One lane from Katigbak Drive and the South Drive will accommodate about 75 vehicles with parallel parking spaces.

The Roxas Boulevard Service Road from TM Kalaw to the United Nations Avenue will also include diagonal parking places for approximately 35 vehicles.

One lane from TM Kalaw’s eastward will be accessible for around 70 parallel parked automobiles for VIPs’ drop off. The Northbound Lane of Roxas Blvd., beside the flagpole, will be available for VVIP drop-offs.
