JUST in time for National Women’s Month, the historic marker of the Asociación Feminista Filipina—the Philippines’ first women’s organization—has been restored, reclaiming its place in history after years of neglect.

The project was spearheaded by volunteers from Manileños for Heritage, a non-profit organization committed to encouraging Manila’s citizens to actively participate in preserving the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
“A simple act like restoring a historical marker sends a strong message: it reinforces the significance of our shared history and encourages the community to take action in preserving our cultural heritage,” Manileños for Heritage said on their Facebook post.
They also expressed gratitude to the establishment’s management for their cooperation and support in allowing the marker’s restoration.
“Their support has been instrumental in ensuring that this piece of history continues to be recognized and remembered,” they said.

The Manileños for Heritage assured that they have followed the guidelines set by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in the restoration process, as to “maintain the integrity of the marker while enhancing its visibility.”
Founded in 1905—during the American occupation— at Paz Natividad’s home on Salcedo Street (now Avenida Rizal), the Asociación Feminista Filipina was the first women’s organization in the Philippines.
It was a national organization dedicated to improving the welfare of women across all social classes. Playing a pivotal role in advancing women’s rights, education, and social reforms, it helped shape the country’s early feminist movement. Among its key contributions were the establishment of La Protección de la Infancia, Inc., which focused on child welfare, and Gota de Leche, which promoted women’s health and nutrition.
The association advocated for women’s political equality in municipal and provincial electorates and committees. It was also actively involved in social welfare, pushing for better conditions in prisons, schools, and the workforce.

Restoration efforts like those led by Manileños for Heritage play a crucial role in preserving women’s place in history, ensuring that the Filipina pioneers are not forgotten in the pages of history.
