LPA and Southwest Monsoon, to Soak Long Weekend with Rain

by Bryan Gadingan

GOT ANY plans for the long weekend? Many may need to revise their outdoor plans as a Low Pressure Area (LPA) and the prevailing Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) are expected to bring rains across the country.

Although long weekends are often seen as perfect opportunities for travel, bonding with family, and taking a break, the threat of incoming bad weather could make those plans difficult to carry out.

Based on the latest daily weather forecast from PAGASA on Thursday, August 21, there is a “medium” chance that the LPA currently within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) may develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

The LPA was last located 705 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, and is moving in a west-northwest direction. It is expected to affect parts of Northern and Central Luzon in the coming days.

Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are forecast over Metro Manila, as well as in the Bicol Region, CALABARZON, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, and Biliran.

Meanwhile, the rest of Visayas, the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan can also expect cloudy skies and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms—this time primarily due to the habagat.

The remaining parts of the country will likely see partly cloudy to cloudy skies, with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms.

By staying updated, adjusting outdoor activities, and opting for indoor alternatives, what might initially seem like a disrupted long weekend could still turn into a peaceful break filled with rest, quality time, or personal reflection.
