Kanlaon Volcano Eruption Triggers Ashfall and Flight Warnings

by Rescel Ocampo

MT. Kanlaon once again erupted, prompting authorities to warn residents, reroute flights, and report ashfall in parts of Negros Occidental on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that Mt. Kanlaon’s explosive eruption began at 5:51 a.m. and was still ongoing when the agency released its update on social media.

Alert level 3 is maintained, which means that there is a high level of volcanic activity.

Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas urged the residents of Canlaon City to remain vigilant following the explosion.

“To the people of Canlaon City, please be ready as we do not know the extent of this eruption,” posted Cardenas on the city’s official Facebook page.

He warned the residents living in the volcano’s 6-km area to not let their guard down, as they are in the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) of the volcano.

Meanwhile, the ashfall seemed to be one of the utmost concerns around the area.

“May mga reported na pong ashfall. May mga abo na pong nakarating sa kanilang barangay,” said Director Raul Fernandez of Office of Civil Defense in Region 6 in an interview with Dobol B TV.

He added that Barangay Sag-Ang in La Castellana, Barangays Yubo and Ara-al in La Carlota, and Bago City are affected by it.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) also warned flights to steer clear of Kanlaon Volcano due to the potential risks posed by the volcanic ash.

“The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for flights near Mt. Kanlaon, with vertical limits from the surface up to 22,000 feet,” they said.

This is Mt. Kanlaon’s third eruption, with the first one occurring on June 3, 2024.

Months after the December 9 eruption, some families remain in evacuation centers while others stay with relatives outside the danger zone.

Farmers were previously allowed daytime access to their fields but are now barred from entering the 6-km permanent danger zone after the latest eruption.
