Grass fire hits Taal Volcano Island

by Kiko Cueto

STATE seismologists reported a grassfire that broke out at the southwest portion of Taal Volcano Island.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), it was spotted on Tuesday and had directly affected the Binintiang Munti (VTBM) Observation Station.

Reports said that the fire was first seen at 11:24 AM by the station’s IP camera and the VTAG camera in Agoncillo, Batangas.

This is not the first time such an occurrence was made as similar incidents were noted on  March 3, 2023, and May 2, 2024.

According to PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, they are confirming that the fire was still ongoing but weakening.

He also said that it is not related to any volcanic activity.

There were people from the Coast Guard Sub Station (CGSS), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in San Nicolas that responded to the fire. A preliminary assessment by BFP San Nicolas estimated that it had affected approximately three to five hectares.
