DepEd opens public consultation on revised SHS Curriculum

by Rescel Ocampo

The Department of Education (DepEd) has opened an online consultation, inviting the public to share their feedback on the proposed revisions to the Senior High School curriculum.

Under the basic education program, the revised curriculum is scheduled for pilot implementation in School Year 2025–2026.

DepEd provided a 26-page consultation packet, outlining the updates of “strengthened” programs for Grades 11 and 12.

It is accessible online from April 4-11, 2025 for public checking and feedback.

The said curriculum has undergone a multi-year review. It is aimed to provide “more effective and responsive education for Filipino youth.”

“To participate, we recommend starting with the Consultation Packet for an overview of the proposed changes. However, you may also review the Curriculum Guides directly before proceeding to the Consultation Platform to submit your comments,” said DepEd in a statement.

The feedback results that would come from the assessment will determine whether all senior high schools will proceed to the implementation of the curriculum.

Updated Changes

One of the key changes in the revised Senior High School curriculum is the reduction of core subjects—from 15 per semester to just 5 per academic year.

The subjects that are not part of the core will be called as electives rather than specialized or technical subjects.

Moreover, in the revised curriculum, there is a key distinction between strands and clusters. Unlike strands, clusters do not require schools to offer all electives within a specific field. Students are also allowed more freedom to choose their electives from different clusters.

This means that a student could choose to study electives in business and entrepreneurship clusters as well as subjects from art, social sciences, and humanities.

Under the previous curriculum, students were required to take specialized subjects specific to their strand, with certain subjects exclusively available within that strand.

The K–12 curriculum in the Philippines was implemented through the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10533), which added two years of Senior High School to the country’s basic education system. It was designed to align Philippine education with global standards and better prepare students for employment, entrepreneurship, or higher education.
