WHILE some students may cheer for the long class suspensions due to issues of safety for earthquakes and floods, the Deparrtment of Education frowned at the frequency and length, saying it affects the number of school days for a student.
DepEd chief media relations officer Dennis Legaspi said that the LGUs should exercise prudence and balance when deciding to suspend classes.
He underscored the importance of ensuring learning continuity alongside public safety.
“The Department of Education (DepEd) respects the authority of LGUs to suspend classes in the interest of public safety. However, this responsibility must be exercised with balance and prudence,” Legaspi said.
“While caution is important, extended suspensions can disrupt learning and affect students’ development. Every decision should reflect both care for safety and commitment to learning continuity,” he added.
Earlier, Laguna Gov. Sol Aragones suspended classes from October 14 to October 31 to give their personnel time to asses the structural stability of each school.
The DepEd said that they will also coordinate with the Schools Division Offices to deploy alternative learning delivery modes for affected students to ensure that education continues despite disruptions.
