27 million students troop back to classes today

by Kiko Cueto

MORE or less than 27 million students report back to their respective schools today, as the Department of Education (DepEd) said that everything was “in place” especially during the morning.

“All systems go po ang lahat sa pagbubukas ng ating klase,” DepEd Media Relations chief Dennis Legaspi said in a Viber message to reporters.

No less than President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led in the school opening at the Epifanio delos Santos Elementary School in Manila. He was accompanied by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara.

Meanwhile, Angara also visited the Tenement Elementary School in Taguig, and one school each in Biñan and City of Santa Rosa, both in Laguna provinces.

Back to June

It will be recalled that in June, the DepEd went back to its previous June to March school calendar, in line with Marcos’ directive so as to prevent disruption of classes due to inclement weather or super hot temperatures.

According to the DepEd, they delivered 33,539 laptops for teachers and 5,360 for non-teaching staff under the computerization program.

They were also able to purchase 26,000 smart TV packages with external hard drives to help improve learning delivery outcomes.

For textbook distribution, procurement for Grades 1, 4, and 7 books is already at a 99 percent level; books for Grades 2, 5, and 8 are nearly at a halfway mark; while procurement for the remaining grade levels will start next year, the DepEd said.

The DepEd said they were able to hire 20,000 teachers, but lamented that some schools in Metro Manila and Calabarzon will have a 1:50 teacher student ratio.
