FILIPINOS began trooping to polling places on Monday morning to vote for a new set of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials.
Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 3 p.m.
However, as part of a pilot test by the Commission on Elections, early voting (5 a.m. to 7 a.m.) was implemented in Muntinlupa City and Naga City for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and heavily pregnant women.
A total of 42,001 barangay and SK chairperson positions, as well as 294,007 posts for both Sangguniang Barangay and SK members, are up for grabs.
Police and military personnel have been deployed across the country to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE).
The BSKE was supposed to be held last December, but it was postponed due to a law passed by Congress.
Despite the Supreme Court ruling that the postponement was unconstitutional, the tribunal allowed the elections to proceed on October 30, citing “legal practicality and necessity.”
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently declared October 30 a non-working day to allow Filipinos to cast their ballots for the BSKE.
